Tenk hvor populært croquet kunne blitt..

Although croquet appeared in the 1900 Olympic Games in Paris, with French
nationals taking all gold medals, it has not appeared since. Incidentally the
first woman competitor in any Modern Olympics competed in croquet in that year,
with Mme. Brohy and Mlle. Ohnier taking the honour.

WCF recognises the difficulties of raising the awareness of the sport to a
sufficient level for it to be a contender with other more established, athletic
or adrenaline-type sports that attract larger audiences and levels of
participation. However, some of the principles and objectives of the WCF
directly require it to be proactive in promoting and developing and teaching the
sport and interacting with other sports governing bodies.

The pinnacle of any sports organisation is to be recognised as such by the
International Olympic Committee (IOC). To do that, WCF has many hurdles to cross
before becoming eligible for membership of that or other organisations as
stepping stones towards Olympic recognition. To become recognised by the IOC
each sport must show that it:-

The IOC has a policy of recognising qualifying sports, but to become a
participating summer sport requires separate consideration in direct competition
with those already established. The trend at the moment is to reduce, rather
than increase the number of sports participating at Summer Games. This will make
the job harder. In addition, to be accepted as a competing sport requires the
sport to be commercially viable.

A more realistic objective at this time is to first put WCF into a position
where it will qualify for membership of "Sportaccord", formerly
known as, "GAISF" (The General Association of International Sports Federations)
which eventually could lead to participation in "The World Games".

To become recognised by "Sportaccord", each
summer sport, like croquet, must show, amongst other things that it:-

Membership of "Sportaccord" may also lead to eventual membership of:

First is membership of "Sportaccord" and the World Games. (Croquet was demonstation sport at the 1989 World Games at
Karlsruhe, Germany).

WCF does manage, through its statutes, all
International play but  does not have involvement
with the Laws of Association Croquet nor is it a signatory to the WADA
protocols.

In the meantime, WCF will continue to develop its
own membership and internal management to a point that should qualifying
standards be achieved in the future, a decision by the membership can be
taken.

IOC alters rules for new sports (28th November
2006)

The International Olympic Committee has decided to change
the way new sports are included in future Games.

Delegates agreed to reduce the number of sports for the
2020 Games to 25 during a two-day meeting in Kuwait - with three potentially
voted in.

The IOC has also decided to alter the voting procedure for
new sports.

Just a majority of votes will be needed to bring in a sport
compared to the current two thirds and the new system will come into affect next
year.

The IOC said the changes would make the process of
introducing new sports more exciting.

"This will be more interesting for sports wanting to come
in," said IOC Olympic Games executive director Gilbert Felli.

"It will make the process less conservative and more
flexible."

The Beijing Games in 2008 were the last to feature a core
of 28 sports, as baseball and softball were removed from the London Games in
2012.

From 2016 onwards, the IOC will have a core of 26 with the
possibility of introducing two more.

The IOC had already decided that Games should have a
maximum of 28 sports and a minimum of 25.

Croquet at the Olympics

Croquet has only been played once in the history of the modern olympics but
can claim one honour involving the sporting inclusion of women.

The Games of 1900 were held in Paris as part of the Exposition Universelle
Internationale - the Paris World’s Fair.

The exposition organizers spread the events over five months and
de-emphasised their Olympic status to such an extent that many athletes died
without ever knowing that they had participated in the Olympics.

Here women made their first appearance in the modern Games. The first to
compete were Mme. Filleaul Brohy, Mlle. Marie Ohnier and Mlle Desprès of France
in croquet.

In all there were ten competitors who played in three events. Singles (one
ball and two ball) and doubles. Nine of the competitors were from France and the
other from Belgium

Report of Croquet at the II Olympiad, Paris 1900. (Unattributed)
"This game, French in name and origin (though some writers, more fashoinable
than athletic, affect to call it crocket) has hardly any pretensions to
athletism and the reason it joined the USFSA (The Union of French Sports Clubs)
is due to the fact that its governing body wished to elevate this gentle pastime
to the rank of a sport by holding annual croquet championships. One would be
wrong however, to disdain croquet. It develops a combinative mind - one has only
to see it transform young girls into reasoners, and from reasoners into
reasonable people.

Mr. Andre Despres, civil engineer by profession and the legislator of
croquet, lavished the most enlightened and devoted care on the Exhibition
tournament. Baron Gourgand provided him with a sand court built specially for
the occasion, not without expense, in a pretty corner of the Cercle du Bois de
Boulogne. The best players in Paris competed there, and were very pleased with
the facilities. One must admit that there were not many players, about a dozen.
The obstinacy of the Paris 'set' in spreading the different competitions o
